Adjust it for how long you're going

Whether you're away for two weeks or two months, the pack barely changes - you do laundry, you don't pack more clothes. Aim for around a week of quick-dry outfits you can wash in a sink, plus one warm layer and one rain layer. Everything should earn its place by doing more than one job.

Adjust it for the weather

Crossing climates is normal on a long trip, so layer rather than pack for each. A merino base layer, a packable insulated jacket and a light rain shell cover most of what a season throws at you. Add or shed as you travel instead of carrying a wardrobe for every forecast. You can also let PackParrot suggest changes from the forecast - enter your destination and dates and it adapts the list for you.

Easy to forget

Don't leave without:
  • A padlock for hostel lockers
  • A quick-dry travel towel
  • A universal travel adapter
  • Copies of your passport, digital and paper
  • A packable daypack for day trips
  • A basic first aid and medication kit

Frequently asked questions

What should I pack for backpacking?

Around a week of quick-dry, mix-and-match clothing, one warm and one rain layer, a lean toiletry kit, your documents and tech, and security items like a padlock. The checklist above is built for long trips - load it into PackParrot and cut anything that doesn't earn its weight.

How much should my backpack weigh?

As little as you can manage - many long-term travellers keep a carry-on-sized pack under 8-10 kg. The trick is choosing multi-use items and doing laundry rather than packing more clothes.

Do I need to pack differently for two weeks versus two months?

Barely. Past about a week of clothing, you launder rather than add. A two-month pack looks a lot like a two-week pack with better laundry habits.

How do I keep my things secure in hostels?

A small padlock for lockers, a digital and paper copy of your passport, and keeping valuables in your daypack rather than your main bag covers most situations.
